Why was the ISMH founded?
The ISMH was founded in 2000, when specialists became aware of the need for gender-specific medicine. The scientific consensus is that the inherent difference between men and women is, at most, only partly responsible for the discrepancies in morbidity and mortality rates between the sexes. All over the world, life expectancy for men is less than that for women, with men more likely than women to suffer from conditions such as heart disease and cancer. In addition, not only are health risk factors such as smoking, alcohol abuse and obesity more common among men, but men also utilize preventative health services less frequently than women. This disparity is even more pronounced in populations of low socio-economic status.
